Obituary

A. Joy Rowe passed away peacefully on October 10, 2013 at Wilson Hospital. As in all of her life, she was surrounded by her loving family and special friends. She was born in Hancock, NY, to Leo and Dorothy (Geer) Coddington on July 20, 1931. Her parents preceded her in death. Joy graduated from Preston High School, Lakewood, PA in 1948 at the age of 16, having skipped 2 grades. In December 1952, while working for Judge James Curry in Livingston Manor, NY, a tall, handsome uniformed NYS Trooper, stepped before the Judge and into Joy's life forevermore. Samuel N. Rowe and Joy Coddington were married on March 22, 1953. He promptly nicknamed her "Joyous". Supporting her husband's career in the New York State Police, Joy managed the couple's home and reared their four children, while Sam was promoted from Investigator to Senior Investigator, Lieutenant and finally Captain. Tragically, on May 1, 1970, Capt. Samuel Rowe, Sr. was killed in an automobile accident, while en route to home from a gambling raid in Binghamton. As a couple they had many close friends and enjoyed hunting and fishing together, and as a family they introduced us to the world of camping. She is survived by their four children, who were reared with abundant love and wished nothing but the best for. Daughters Terry Ann Rowe, Endicott, NY, Sue Ellen Rowe and fianc William D. Girtman, New Port Richey, FL, Robin Joy and her husband and beloved son-in-law Randy L. Evanitsky, Sr. of Starlight, PA, and their son Samuel N. Rowe Jr. and his precious wife Laura (Wormuth) of Hancock, NY. Also surviving are her "Children of the Heart", Robert S. and Mary Lou Martin, Livonia, NY and Edwin L. Greenman and his wife Sandra (Martin), of Otego, NY.Joy is survived by her dearest baby brother David J. Coddington and his wife and her "Favorite Sister-In-Law" Josie (Cherundolo) Coddington, Montrose, PA., and was predeceased by a brother Jerry Coddington in 1939.Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren include: Michael Royer and his son Grayson Samuel of Lansing, NY, Katherine Seeley and Shane Morgan and her daughter Emma Katherine Briggs of Sylvania, PA, Philip J. Seeley and his wife Susie and children Zachary and Ellen of Hinesburg, VT, Jaime Lee (Bettis) and her husband Mitch Bengston and four children of NM, Randy L Evanitsky Jr. and his wife Bridget (Hubbell) and their daughters Sage Marie, Erin Lynn and Lana May of Lakewood, PA, Andrea Joy (Seeley) and her husband Christopher Murrell and their son Ryan Auguste of Bellefonte, PA. Wendy Joy Evanitsky of Starlight,PA, Brian Evanitsky of Hancock,NY, Gabriela Moritz of Endwell, NY, Kristina (Evanitsky) and her husband Michael Dufton and their children Holden Michael and Harper Rose, Desari (Marrtin) and her husband KyleMaurer and their son Kenneth Samuel, Carmen Joy Rowe and Shelbi Ann Rowe of Hancock, NY.We, her entire family, wish to thank extended family and friends who have graciously offered us a variety of assistance during this difficult time, especially to Sandra Greenman for her weekly visits which Mom looked forward to. Additionally we would like to thank her most wonderful caregiver, Marlene Keen for all of her attention and affection. We have high praise for her medical team including: Dr. Christopher Ryan, Dr. Marina Wasylyshyn, Dr. Ronald Harris. We were so grateful, that with this help, we were able to keep her within the arms of our closely knit family while she was ill, especially since October of 2013.Our mother, an active citizen of the United States, a believer in democracy, and was active in politics at the local, state and national level. She was especially fervent about the people's right to vote. She was honored as the "Delaware County Republican Woman of the Year." She served on the Village of Hancock Board as a Trustee, the Town of Hancock Board as a Councilwoman, and was elected to the office Town Supervisor of Hancock, NY an office currently held by her son Samuel. In addition she was employed as a Congressional District Aide for Representative Hamilton Fish and Howard Robison as well as a New York Senate District Aide for Charles D. Cook. She served as the Deputy Treasurer of Delaware County NY, under Treasurer Cyrus W.Schoonmaker. She also had been the sole proprietor of Crane's Liquor Store in Deposit.Joy was an active woman, not only physically but in volunteering and participating in hunting, fishing, bowling and golf. She earned the Women's Championship of the Hancock Golf Course. In bowling, she served as league Secretary and President at Fox Bowling Center, Hancock, NY. She was elected as a Director of the Southern Tier Bowling Assn. She bowled on the local, state and national level and received special acknowledgment as a Southern Tier USBC as a Hall of Fame Bowler and also by the WIBC at a special presentation in Reno, NV for bowling in 25 National WIBC tournaments. She was a Charter Member of the Hancock Fire Department Auxiliary and also was a member of the Hancock Ambulance Squad.Everywhere she went she found new friends and she took her friendships seriously. Joy was and avid Boston Red Sox fan since 1948. She teased and was teased often by her friends and acquaintances who were members of "that other team's" fan club. She was a lover of travel and was proud to have been to each of the USA's 50 States. Driving was a passion for her and her most recent long trip included driving every mile to and from Jekyll Island, GA in 2013. She had come to love Jekyll Island, GA and was fond of the fact that her husband enlisted in the Army from Glynn County, GA, where she found Jekyll Island. Everyone in her family and many dear friends have special memories with her on Jekyll Island.Joy was an active member of Emory United Methodist Church, in Hancock, NY. Until her death, there were four generations of members in her family of that church. She was a crucial fundraiser for the refurbishment of the church's organ, member of the United Methodist Women, a former Sunday School Teacher, choir member and worker.Services for A. Joy Rowe will be held at the Emory United Methodist Church, 89 East Main Street, Hancock, NY. There will be a time of visitation with the family at the church on Sunday, October 12, 2014 from 2pm to 5pm. Her funeral will be at the church on Monday. October 13, 2014 at 1pm. Pall Bearers will be: Michael Royer, Philip Seeley, Randy Evanitsky, Michael Dufton, Joshua Greenman, Brian Evanitsky and Christopher Murrell.Memorial donation may be sent to Emory United Methodist Church, 89 E.
