Obituary

Beatrice "Bea" Kaplan passed away Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Willow Point Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Vestal, N.Y., two days before her 91st birthday. Bea was born April 29, 1926 in Long Eddy, N.Y. Her parents, Samuel and Ida (Levy) Kaplan, immigrated from the Province of Minsk, Belorussia to Ellis Island, NYC in 1908, and after several years in NYC moved to Jeffersonville, NY, Long Eddy, NY and finally to Hancock, NY in 1930. During this period, they had five children: Bea and her twin brother, Bernard, were the youngest siblings, following Rose, Ralph, and Charles.Bea graduated from Hancock Central School in 1944. For many years she kept in touch with friends and classmates, and enjoyed attending Hancock Central School reunions. Bea loved to visit with company in her home in West End, Hancock, and to stay in touch with friends and family in the area. Her appreciation of those she cared for was also thoughtfully documented through her avid practice of photographing memorable occasions. As the family's informal historian, she was happy to share her collection of photographs and to offer an oral account of significant family events. An automobile aficionado, she was proud to own and drive a number of GM cars from both her brothers businesses, Ralphs Kaplan Motors next door to her home in Hancock, and Charles Kaplan Motors in Deposit, NY. She spent 30 years (1950-80) as office manager working for her brother Charles auto sales and repair, Kaplan Motors. In later years, she was employed as assistant Town Clerk in Hancock and in the 1980s, she had a short but successful run co-owning and managing a local variety shop, " The Outlet Store" in Hancock with her life-long best friend, Joyce Skinner DuMond. Bea also enjoyed many years both as a golfer and as a bowler. In addition to her fondness for people, Bea adored each of her pet poodles, who would often accompany her on local outings.Bea is survived by her twin brother, Bernard (State College, PA), her sister-in-law, Barbara (Charles) Kaplan (Spring Hill, FL), many nieces, nephews and friends, and her Teacup Poodle, Honey. As per Beas request, cremation took place and her ashes will be interred in Riverview Cemetery, Hancock, at a later date. Arrangements by Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock.
