Bernice Stephens, 101, of Hancock, NY, died on November 25th, 2017. She was born in Norwich, NY, to Henry and Rosa (Schraft) Crook and grew up in Cadosia, NY. On August 14, 1934, she married Francis Stephens and he predeceased her in 1987 after 53 years of happiness. They had lived in Waverly, NY, for three years while he was employed on the Erie Railroad; then moved to Hancock, where he was employed for 35 years by the Hancock Telephone Company, before retiring in 1973.Bernice was devoted to her role as wife and mother and she loved the outdoors. For years, she and Francis owned a hunting camp and both enjoyed deer hunting and hiking in the woods. She and her Remington 30.06 scored 18 deer in 21 years. They also maintained a large garden for as long as their health permitted. Bernice also had a passion for bird watching and hard a large variety of birds at her feeders through the years. Her 100th birthday celebration with friends, neighbors, and her daughter was a joy to her and she enjoyed an extensive card shower and a plaque from the mayor. Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn of New York City, and one sister, Rena Jackson of Plymouth, NY, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 2 sisters, Dorothy Morack of Norwich, NY, and Frederica Steward of Oxford, NY. At Bernices request, there will be no calling hours or formal services. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery and arrangements by Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock. Memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Hancock Ambulance, P.O.
