Carolyn Jane Smith-Ellis-Terrell, 82, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Ellen Memorial Nursing Home on Friday January 16, 2026. She was born on May 7, 1943 to the late Robert Smith and Julia Baker-Smith. She graduated from Hancock Central School in 1960. Carolyn enjoyed horseback riding, ceramics, dancing, bowling, NASCAR, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the New York Yankees. She was a farmer, bus driver, and was very passionate about her job as a CNA.
Carolyn was married to Norman Ellis on September 3rd, 1960. Together they had six children, Robert Ellis & Judy Ellis, Tamara Whitmore, Leslie & Mary Ellis, Mark & Debbie Ellis, Scott & Janet Ellis, Melissa & Jonathan Eakle. She has 21 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
She was then remarried to Francis Leonard Terrell on March 24, 1989. She has six stepchildren: Debbie Terrell, Kathy Terrell, Patrick Terrell, Bobby Terrell, Michael Terrell, and Johnny Terrell.
Carolyn is survived by her siblings Shirley Depew, Nancy Fuller, Linda Wilcha, Leroy Smith, and Jeff Smith.
She is predeceased by her parents, Robert & Julia Smith, husband Francis Terrell, sister Nina Bolinger, and son-in-law David Whitmore.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family would also like to thank the staff at Ellen Memorial Nursing Home in Honesdale, PA, for taking such wonderful care of her throughout the last few years.
A viewing for friends and family will be held Tuesday, January 20, 2026 from 6pm to 8pm at Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock, New York.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at 12pm at Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel.
There will be a luncheon following the funeral service at American Legion in Hancock, New York.
A graveside service is set for spring in Hale Eddy Cemetery.
