Obituary

Dieter O. Lohndorf, "Opa", a resident of Hancock, New York entered into eternal rest at his home on May 9, 2014, after a long battle with cancer. He was 76 years old. He was the son of Otto and Wilma Lohndorf. Dieter was born in Bremerhaven, Germany, on June 10, 1937.Dieter was the beloved husband to Carol for 44 years, but they had only known each other for three weeks before they married. Dieter was the loving father to Victoria Bennett and Heidi Gridley. He was a beloved "Opa" to five grandchildren. Dieter served proudly in the United States Army for six years. After being honorably discharged, he started his career as a Park Police Officer for the Palisades Interstate Park Commission where he retired after 27 years. Dieter also served in the United States Army Reserves during his employment as a police officer.Dieter had a deep love for all animals where he would provide love and a wonderful home. We all loved him for his droll sense of humor. Dieter and Carol raised their daughters, Victoria and Heidi, in Bear Mountain State Park and moved to Hancock, New York upon his retirement. He was heavily involved with the Emory Methodist Church in which he could not be more proud. Dieter is pre-deceased by his father, Otto, mother, Wilma, his sisters, Rena, Margot, and Elke. Dieter is survived by his beloved wife, Carol, his daughters, Victoria Bennett, and Heidi Gridley, his son in laws, John Bennett and Mark Gridley. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Shelby and Ashley Bennett, and Emma, Jacob, and Lucas Gridley, and many nieces, nephews and their families. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 from 12-1PM with a memorial service following at 1 all at the Emory United Methodist Church, Hancock.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Emory United Methodist Church, 89 E Main St., Hancock, NY 13783.
