Obituary

Dolores Bentham passed away on Aug. 22. She contributed much to our area. She came from NYC, when she recognized how beautiful our region was and knew it was where she wanted to live. She found Hancock functioning as a good community to stay in and be a part of. Dolores and her partner George Babio, now deceased, owned several rental houses in the village of Hancock and East Branch on Readburn Rd. Dolores was one of the curators for the Town Hall Gallery and the Big D Arts and Crafts League, which is now at the Inn at Starlight Lake. She also claimed it took her thirty three years to get her bachelors Degree and only six years for her Masters, which she got at 70. She presented her scientific work on "Evolution" at Citizens Science Conference in Philadelphia and also the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Colorado at their poster sessions. And though her major interest in life was Science she had the love of Art as well. As a student at the Barnes Foundation she was able to study philosophy and art appreciation. She said she wanted to know the meaning of art, not thinking that in her later years she too would be an artist. But an artist she became, using watercolor techniques in her very own style. She had shown her work at the Windsor Fair, the Hancock Town Hall, the Hancock Art Walk, The Inn at Starlight Lake, The Spring Fair in Roscoe and the NOHO Art Walk in NYC where she was awarded second prize. Besides Art she was also a writer and a member of the Delaware River Writers Group. And she has a published book of her artwork with Pramila Venkateswaran, a poet, from their show at the High Water Salon in Equinunk. She is survived by her son John Bentham, his wife Liyang Xia and two beautiful grandchildren Malaika and Ananda, her son Paul Bentham and his wife Tomoko Saito and her sister Carol Landy. She will be sadly missed by many of her friends in Hancock. Her contributions to our community were many, whether helping others, or charming us with her sense of humor made her a victor. There will be a funeral service held on Friday, August 25, 2017 at 11AM at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Hancock. Arrangements by Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock. SERVICES Funeral Service Friday, August 25, 2017 11:00 AM Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel 29 EAST MAIN STREET HANCOCK, New York 13783
