Doris Dix Davis, a lifelong area resident, died at her home, in Hancock, on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at the age of 104. She was born Doris Dix in Starlight, PA., on September 26, 1909, a daughter to Julia and Alva Dix. Her father moved to Winwood (Lakewood) to operate a store, and later moved the family to Autumn Leaves, where they took up farming. Following her father's early death, the family moved to Hancock. She graduated from Hancock Central School in 1927, and attended the Cortland Normal School, gaining her teaching degree. She taught fourth grade in Ithaca and later ran the Audio Visual department at HCS for many years, retiring in 1980.She was a member of the Koo Koose Chapter of the DAR, and served as the organist at the First Presbyterian Church in Hancock for over 30 years. She belonged to the Hancock - Chehocton Historical Society and was well known for her large collection of dolls. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and donated many afghans to the Veteran's Home in Oxford. Doris was married to Etsyl Davis in 1941. He predeceased her in 1994.Surviving are one son, Gordon Davis, Hancock; two grandchildren, Edward Davis, California, and Audrey Holden of South Carolina; four great grandchildren: Alysha Little, Stephen Jones, Cearah Jones, all of South Carolina, and Danica Sue Davis, California; one great great granddaughter, Clayre Little; many cousins. Doris was also predeceased by a brother, Donald Dix.Funeral services were held on Friday, March 7, at 4 p.m. at the Henderson - Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock.
