Dr. James Roland Gay of Lakewood, Pennsylvania, passed away on July 20, 2015, in Waymart, Pennsylvania at the age of 101. James was born on June 23, 1914, to Ruth Lenington and Owen Weiss Gay, in Dunmore, Pennsylvania.Dr. Gay graduated from The Virginia Polytechnic and State University in 1935 and earned an M.D. degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1939. He married Lillian Cabell of Richmond, Virginia on July 2, 1940. A fellowship in neurosurgery at The Mayo Foundation and Clinic was interrupted by service in World War II, where he was assigned to medical staff positions in the United States Army and obtained the rank of major. In 1949, James received a M.S. degree in neurosurgery from The University of Minnesota. He was engaged in the private practice of neurosurgery at Columbus, Ohio and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, until his appointment as head of Neurological Surgery at the Lovelace Clinic, Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1961 - 1968. Dr. Gay then served as director of the New Mexico Regional Medical Program until 1974. He became associate vice president for health affairs at the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences, Memphis, and was Director of International Programs. Dr. Gay was a founding member and president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons where he promoted international affairs and assisted in the development of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies. Dr. Gay served as a Board member and chairman of the Strategy Committee of Wayne Memorial Hospital. Dr. Gay is survived by Lillian, his wife of seventy-five years; his sister, Ruth Gay Frederick, of Lakewood, Pennsylvania; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marguerite Gay Adams. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, July 24 at the First Presbyterian Church, in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, at 2:00 pm. Burial at the Fitch Cemetery, Center Moreland, PA, will follow on a later date at the convenience of the family.
