Obituary

Eleanor A. Stanton, 102, of Lake Shehawken, PA, died on Sunday, September 14, 2014, surrounded by her family, at home. She was born on June 22, 1912 in Lake Shehawken, the daughter of Howard A. and Lillian (Sanford) Dix. Eleanor married Robert O. Stanton on June 28, 1941.Eleanor graduated from Preston High School, Lakewood, PA, as Valedictorian. She then attended Mansfield State College, University of Illinois, and University of North Carolina. Following her education, she taught English at Preston High School and was also on the Preston School Board. Eleanor was fond of her rural life at Lake Shehawken, and loved her beautiful surroundings. She realized early on that environment had a major impact on a child's upbringing and philosophy. She looked forward to the cottage community returning each summer. She was always interested in the lives of her neighbors, their children, and grandchildren. Eleanor was an avid gardener and took much pride in her annual and perennial flower and vegetable gardens.Church played a large role in Eleanor's life as a child. Her mother was an organist in the church and her father served as Sunday School Superintendent. She was a member of the Shehawken Methodist Church and the women's organization for many years. A favorite Bible Verse of hers was "I will lift my eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord who made heaven and earth." Psalm 121. Eleanor was a grateful and appreciative person. She learned to adapt to life, to live and change with events as they occurred, and to continue to learn and grow throughout her whole life. Eleanor's advice for living was to keep your sense of humor and to lead an orderly, moral life to the best of your ability. She was shaped by the setting, her life on the farm, and her love of the lakeside community. Her energy and talents were used to create a unique and stable family home. Hard work, serving your church and community and simply enjoying life, were defining beliefs of Eleanor. She was a great inspiration to her children and grandchildren. Traveling was important to Eleanor and her husband, Bob. They traveled extensively, believing it was important to explore different areas of the country and world. Eleanor enjoyed visiting family and friends in California and camping and traveling with a farm organization group to learn and study about farming in other countries. They visited China, Russia, South America, Japan, Australia, Africa, and most of Europe and Mexico. She loved entertaining her family and friends with amusing anecdotes from her adventures. Eleanor lived a long, active, productive life and she will be missed by all who knew her.Surviving are her husband of 73 years, Robert, 2 daughters, Christine Johannman, Elmira, NY, and Barbara Stanton Dix, New Britain, CT, 2 sons, Larry (Kathy) Stanton, Great Bend, PA, and Bruce (Judie) Stanton, Lake Shehawken, PA, 7 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
