Elton Vernon Clark of Hancock passed away November 11, 2014 at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford. He was born April 19, 1915 in Deposit NY to the late George Dorwin & Lena Blakeslee Clark. Growing up, Clarkie collected eggs each morning to send to market before heading off to caddy at Scott's Oquaga Lake Golf Course where his lifelong love of golf began. He taught many others the game and continued to play golf well into his 90's. For several years, he worked at Savage Arms in Utica and was an Adirondack guide. He joined the navy during World War II, serving under Admiral Pride on the USS Eldorado. Clarkie worked as a mechanic after the war and later as bartender at the original Hancock House. Then for many years he worked at the Delaware Inn where he was happy to demonstrate his pool skills to the inexperienced.On May 25, 1960 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Conrad at the Emory Methodist Church in Hancock, NY. In their 49 years together, Liz & Clarkie enjoyed entertaining in their lovely home when friends & family would often come to visit. He was predeceased by his bride, Elizabeth, his stepson Gary Mason, his brother Dorwin & his sister Murial.Clarkie is survived by his daughter, Sandra & Vaughn Karcher & their family, his daughter-in-law, Janet Mason & her family, his nephew Richard Hissin and many friends.Thank you to the NYS Veterans Home Staff, especially Chris, for the outstanding care received during his stay. Clarkie appreciated your kindness. Graveside services will be at Riverview Cemetery in Hancock at 11:00am on Friday, Nov 14, 2014 with David Bosket officiating.
