IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Evelyn L.
Hoops
January 17, 1936 – January 9, 2026
Evelyn L Hoops, 89, of Lake Como, Pennsylvania, peacefully entered into her eternal rest on January 9, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones. She was a woman whose life was defined by love, resilience and devotion to her family.
Evelyn was born on January 17, 1936, in Scott Center, Pennsylvania to Nelson & Gertrude (Weber) Whitmore. She lived in many places including Texas, California, Georgia, Alabama, Germany and New York but always considered the Wayne County Pennsylvania area to be her home. She grew up with a large family surrounded by her grandparent's farm where hard work was just a part of life. She told many stories of her childhood boasting of logging with her sister and father using only horses to pull the timber.
Evelyn attended a one room schoolhouse at the beginning of their road and then graduated with honors from Preston High School (the BIG school) where she excelled in academics and was the captain of the cheerleading squad. She was very active in the community, as a boy scout den mother, church schoolteacher, served on the local election board and attended senior meetings. She worked at Bard Parker for 9 years and joined in golf and bowling leagues where she was very competitive. Along with being able to knit or crochet anything, she loved sewing and spent many happy years in the company of her sewing club creating treasured quilts for her family and friends. She was also a most devoted gardener maintaining legendary flower and vegetable gardens well into her later years.
Evelyn leaves behind her seven children from her first marriage to the late John E Gordon (d. 12/16/2024) - Dorlene Cuellar, Perry (Sherri) Gordon, Mary (Chris) Reno, Paul (Sharon) Gordon, Patrick Gordon, Teresa Dirig and Phillip (Leigh Ann) Gordon along with a large and ever-growing family of 24 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Nothing brought her more pride and joy than the family she created and supported. She is also survived by sisters Dale Whitmore and Lugene (Gary) Williams as well as brother Nelson 'Hank' (Jean) Whitmore, and sister in law, Mary Whitmore.
Evelyn now is reunited with her second husband, William Hoops, whom she deeply loved and lost in 1993. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Christopher Robinson, sisters Florence Mead, Dona Curtis, Leona Kader, and Esther Thoma along with brother, Dennis Whitmore.
As per her wishes, a summertime celebration of life will be announced at a later date. If you would like to make a donation in her name, please consider the Northern Wayne Senior Center - c/o Wayne County Office On Aging - 323 10th Street; Honesdale, PA 18431
A very special thank you to Rolland 'Boomer' Bojo and his amazing staff at UHS Delaware County, Walton for all of the wonderful care and kindness shown to our mother and family.
