Gerald D. Swartwout, 81, of Hancock, NY, died on Friday, May 5, 2017, at Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, NY, after a short illness. Jerry was born on March 5, 1936 in Fishs Eddy, NY, the son of Edward and Dorothea (Leonard) Swartwout. In 1954, the left high school and served in the U.S. Army until 1957. Shortly after his honorable discharge, he married his love, Joyce Robbins, on December 24, 1957. They made their home in Hancock, NY, and had 6 children. Jerry was a well known man, active in his community and was a lover of sports. Many years ago, he played semi pro football, coached peewee football in Hale Eddy, and was a baseball umpire. He loved watching the boys play baseball and football. Jerry can be remembered as a Hancock Police Officer, a Security Guard for Hancock Central School for 20+ years, and especially for the 40 years that he and Joyce were Mr. and Mrs Claus at Christmas time. He enjoyed cutting stone and mowing his lawn, making sure it was just right. Jerry was an avid hunter, fisherman, and most of all, a very active family man. Surviving are his wife, Joyce, 5 children, Tammy and husband Ted Jamieson, Terry and husband Al Johnson, Toby Esolen, Troy and wife Deborah Swartwout, and Tracy Wellman, 8 granchildren, Rebecca Ferbey, Sheila Jamieson, Lauren Wellman, Stephanie Johnson, Stephen Esolen, Cody Wellman, Thomas Esolen, and Leah Swartwout. Jerry is also survived by 1 sister, Muriel Milk, 1 brother, Dennis Swartwout, several nieces and nephews, and his special dog, Princess. He was predeceased by his son, Timothy Swartwout, son in law, Ken Esolen, 1 sister, Louise Martin, and 1 brother, William Swartwout. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 from 2-4PM with a memorial service following at 4PM all at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock.
