Gordon E. Houghtaling, 86, of Honesdale, PA, died on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at Mountain View Care Center, Scranton, PA. He was born on August 2, 1931, in Equinunk, PA, the son of the late Edwin and Icle (Ewain) Houghtaling.Gordon married the love of his life, Madelyn Young, on December 27, 1953, in Equinunk, PA, and she predeceased him on April 21, 2012. Together they operated Gordons Store in Equinunk for over twenty years, and the Equinunk General Store remains in the family to this day. Gordon retired in 2005 after driving school buses for the Hancock Central School District for over 30 years. He was a member of the Pine Mill Methodist Church. In his youth, Gordon was trained as a ground observer in aircraft recognition during World War II. Gordon graduated from Hancock Central School in 1949. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he was trained as a cook, serving from 1954-1956, and then joining the Pennsylvania National Guard where he served until 1959. He was very active in the Equinunk area as a member of the Equinunk Sportsmens Association, Wallerville Hunting Club, Equinunk Historical Society, and the Equinunk Volunteer Fire Department. His pleasures in life included hunting, bowling, playing cards and visiting with friends, and most of all, traveling with Madelyn.Surviving are a brother, Sheldon and his wife, Edith Houghtaling, and three generations of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Lois Lind.Services will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the Pine Mill United Methodist Church. The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to noon, and the service will be at noon, with Rev. Keith Albee officiating. Immediately after the service, there will be a short graveside service at the Pine Mill Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the Pine Mill Community Hall.Donations can be made in Gordons memory to either the Equinunk Historical Society, P.O.
