Helen Hathaway Freedman, 79, of Brevard, NC, passed away on December 18, 2025. She was born June 26, 1946, in Binghamton, N.Y., to Chuck and Kay Hathaway.
A woman of deep faith and boundless energy, Helen devoted her life to her family and her community. She is survived by her husband, Emanuel Freedman of Brevard, NC; her children, Catherine Wakefield of New York, NY, Joseph DaBrescia (Michele) of Corolla, N.C, and Jacqueline DaBrescia Torres (Gabe Labb) of Hendersonville, N.C.; and her stepson, David Freedman (Marissa, of Binghamton, N.Y. She is also survived by her sister, Carol MacMaster, of Equinunk, Pa., and her brother, Sam Hathaway (Ellen), of Mountain City, Texas.
Helen was a loving grandmother to Caleb (Amy) Barnes, Zachary (Alexis) DaBrescia, Matthew (Preston) DaBrescia, Linnea (Dakota) DaBrescia, Alex Torres, Eli Torres, Will, Tess, Drew, and Grey Wakefield, Bryant, Phoenix, and Sebastian Freedman, and a proud great-grandmother to Maeve, Henry, Ellie, Raelynn, and Colton. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Andrea DaBrescia.
Helen worked for Leonard Bus Sales and Wheelock's Pharmacy in Hancock, NY, before retiring to Brevard, NC. She enjoyed hiking and traveling, was active in the Hathaway Family Reunion Association, volunteered with Hospice and the Rise and Shine after-school program, and was a devoted member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Brevard.
No funeral services are planned at this time. Family and close friends will gather in the spring in Cannonsville, N.Y., for a memorial service being planned by Joseph and Jacqueline to celebrate Helen's life and the love she shared so freely. Updates regarding the memorial service will be shared on Joseph's and Jacqueline's social media pages.
