Irene Mary Brooking Curtis, 82, of Pleasant Mount, PA, passed away at her home on May 24, 2020 after a lengthy illness.
She was born to Marshall and Florance Wolfe Brooking on September 25, 1937 in Preston Township (Wayne County). Irene grew up as the fifth generation on the Brooking family farm. In 1955, she graduated with honors as Valedictorian of her class at Lakewood High School. After graduation, Irene held several jobs, but ultimately returned to her first love; farming. She and her family owned and operated Brookstead Dairy Farm until her retirement at the age of 79. Irene was also interested in bird-watching, reading, cooking, the Boston Celtics and watching Jeopardy every night. But by far, her favorite activity was driving her tractors during harvest time!
Irene was a member of the Pleasant Mount Methodist Church. Over the years she baked countless cupcakes and other goodies for numerous community fundraisers. Irene was a generous woman and never hesitated to lend a helping hand.
Life handed Irene many challenges and obstacles which she met with the same extreme hard work, dogged determination, and persevering pioneer spirit that successfully brought her family ancestors to Pleasant Mount in the early 1800s. Irene Brooking Curtis was one of a kind and will be greatly missed!
Irene is survived by her beloved son, Charles M. Curtis and wife, Marian Curtis, of Pleasant Mount; her precious sister, Marsha Anderson and husband, Carl Anderson, of Pleasant Mount; her niece, Sandra Komar and husband Bill Komar, of Pleasant Mount, her nephew, Ricky Anderson of Pleasant Mount, a great niece, two great nephews, and numerous cousins.
Irene was preceded in death by a daughter, Kendall L. Curtis.
The family wishes to thank Home Health Care Professionals and Hospice for the kind and loving care provided for Irene.
Due to the current restrictions imposed regarding COVID-19, a private burial service will take place at Wheeler Hill Cemetery in Pleasant Mount at the convenience of the family.
