James "Jim" Mercer Hutton III

December 16, 1942 - April 4, 2024

James Mercer Hutton III, 81, beloved partner and cherished father died Thursday, April 4, 2024 peacefully in his home in Hancock, New York, surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Miami, Florida, Jim spent his formative years in Hancock, NY. He graduated from Hancock Central School and pursued higher education at Syracuse University. His career journey began as a shoe salesman at The Brown Shoe Company, followed by service at Huttig, a window and door company. At the age of 55, he retired to embrace an off-grid lifestyle in his hometown, where he cultivated his property and home. He took great pride in designing and building his home, strategically positioning it to capture abundant sunlight.

Jim was a true entrepreneur at heart, operating a successful tree farm and selling a variety of fruits, vegetables, trees, wreaths, maple syrup, and honey. He was known for his wheeling and dealing nature, always seeking new opportunities. An avid gardener and outdoorsman, Jim found joy in tending to his bees, landscaping, and cutting wood for his wood stove. He had a passion for hunting, cutting stone in his quarry, and collecting various items. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family on his farm and cherished vacations to Barbados. He will be remembered for his love of apple cake and his dedication to keeping up with the stocks.

Jim was an active member of the Kelsey Community Group, participating in senior dinners, bingo at church, and town square activities. He was known for his hardworking nature, rustic charm, and stubborn yet endearing personality. A social butterfly with a knack for cracking wise, James will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his partner, Nancy Kirchner, his children: Dena Catherine Hutton (James Dundulis), James Mercer Hutton IV, and Ray Elizabeth Lester (Richard Lester Jr.). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Josh Remaley (Maggie Siembab), Ashley Ingram (Stephen Ingram), Virginia Hutton, James Hutton V (Alexis Hutton), Tyler Lester (Abril Benitez), and Stevie Ray Lester. His great-grandchildren include James Hutton VI, Jeremiah Hutton, Rylee Ingram, Raegan Ingram, and Sawyer Ingram.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Mercer Hutton Jr., and mother, Florence Hutton as well as his long time partner Lee Ann Healey.

A celebration of life will be held in his memory in the summer. James leaves behind a legacy of resilience, passion, and love. May his spirit live on in the hearts of those he touched.
