Obituary


James M. Picozzi of Hancock, NY passed away suddenly at home on Sunday, May 24th, 2026.

Born in Brooklyn, NY , James was raised in Staten Island, NY before eventually making his home and building a life in Hancock, where he became a well-known and respected member of the community.

James shared 62 loving years of marriage with his beloved wife, Dorothy Picozzi. Together they built a beautiful family and life centered around love, dedication, and service to others. He was the proud and devoted father of Christopher Picozzi, Nicholas Picozzi (Tiffany Davidson), and Joy Picozzi. He was a beloved brother to Josephine Coniglio and uncle to Salvatore Coniglio Jr. 

He was also a cherished grandfather to Natasha (Brandon) Schubert, Noel Picozzi, Addison Picozzi, Nicholas Picozzi Jr., Lexi Picozzi, Dustin Wormuth, Leah Wormuth, and Hailey Wormuth, all of whom brought him tremendous pride and joy.

Over the course of his lifetime, James accomplished and contributed greatly to his community. He served as a minister at the Readburn Community Church and began his postal career as a mail carrier in the Village of Hancock before later becoming Postmaster. James also dedicated 49 years to law enforcement, serving as a police officer for both the Village of Hancock and the Village of Deposit. James was an active member of the Village of Hancock Fire Department. In addition, he served as Acting Judge for the Village of Hancock Court and was a dedicated member of the Hancock Rotary Club. He also spent time working as a substitute teacher at DCMO BOCES and later retired.

Above all else, James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. James will be remembered for the unwavering love he had for his family, the compassion he showed to others, and the many years he devoted to serving his community. His strength, wisdom, and generous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. James leaves behind a legacy built on faith, service, family, and compassion.

His memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 from 11AM-1PM and 6PM-8PM at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock. A graveside with committal service will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2026 at 11AM in the Riverview Cemetery, Hancock.
