Obituary

James W. "Smitty" Smith, 88, of Hancock, NY, died on Friday, June 28, 2019 at home after a short illness. He was born on July 9, 1930 in Milton, GA, the son of James W. and Jessie Smith. Smitty served for 2 years in the US Navy. He married Martha Henderson on January 25, 1965. Smitty spent his working years as a cook and a truck driver. He loved baseball and was an umpire for many little league games and for other local baseball organizations over the years. Smitty also loved going to the horse track in Monticello, Bingo, and especially loved gardening and flowers. He can be remembered as always waving at everyone as he and his wife frequently sat on the street corner by their apartment. Surviving are his wife, Marcy, 1 daughter, Debra and husband Kevin Bennett, 5 sisters, 1 brother, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 1 sister and 2 brothers. Smittys request was for cremation and there will be no services. Donations can be made in his memory to the Hancock Youth League, P.O. Box 545, Hancock, NY, 13783 or to the Delaware Valley Garden Club, Alice Furfaro, 50 Maple St., Hancock, NY, 13783. Arrangements by Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock.
