Obituary

Dr. James P. "Doc" Watson, known as the "Flying Vet", took his final flight to be with his wife, Louise, of 70 years on March 25, 2018. Doc passed away peacefully at the Sacred Heart Hospice in Dunmore, PA, in his 100th year! Doc was born in Lakewood, PA, on August 21, 1918, the son of James A. and Sarah (Sutcliffe) Watson. He graduated from Preston High School, Lakewood, in 1936, and went on to Bellevue/Mills School of Nursing, where he received a degree in nursing and met the love of his life Louise Leary. They were married on November 29, 1941 in Lake Como, PA. Following Bellevue, he was enrolled in pre-veterinary school at New York University and then graduated from Cornell University as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. While a student at Cornell, Doc was enlisted in the Army and later the Reserves. Doc began his own veterinary practice in Lakewood, PA, in 1945. Doc was very active during his long life. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels in both Susquehanna and Wayne Counties, and was a member of St. Julianas Catholic Church and volunteered at their annual picnic. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 209, Lakewood, PA, and a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. He was a deputy in the sheriffs posse in Sun City, Arizona, and served as Deputy Coroner in Wayne County. He also was on the School Board for Preston Area School in Lakewood, PA. Doc appeared on the television show "To Tell the Truth" in 1964 and the panel guessed he was the veterinarian. Doc was written up in numerous newspaper articles, magazines not only in the U.S. but in Europe publications as well. He received many awards for his contributions to the farming and agriculture community. Doc flew a plane but flying his helicopter was his joy! This was how he traveled to his calls between farms.Doc retired from Veterinary Medicine in 1987 and recalls those years of practice as "a time when handshakes were all you needed when doing business". He and Louise spent winters in Arizona and Florida. They enjoyed hosting foreign vets and their wives and visited them in their countries, including England, France, and Denmark. Doc enjoyed square dancing, flying, loved anything with a motor, but above all Doc loved his family and enjoyed family gatherings, always interested in what was going on in their lives. He was a great story teller, which inspired him to write a book called "A Country Veterinarian Reminisces" in 2008, which captured his life on paper. He will certainly be missed by his family, friends, and farming community. Surviving are 4 children, Peter and wife Susan, The Villages, FL, Richard, Lakewood, PA, Susan Hall, Union Dale, PA, and Ronald and Bonnie, Poyntelle, PA, 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Doc was predeceased by his wife, Louise, 1 brother, Barry and wife Bev, and 3 sisters, Dolores and husband Everett, Marion and husband Barney, and Inez, and 1 daughter in law, Mary Watson.
