Obituary

Joanne Brodsky went home to Heaven on August 30, 2019. She was born on September 8, 1952 in Woodhaven, Queens, the third of four daughters of Ernest and Helen (Amanzio) Fuchs. Joanne worked for ten years as a paralegal in downtown Manhattan. On May 22, 1982 she married Jan Brodsky at The Church in the Gardens in Forest Hills, NY. Her beloved Jan predeceased her on September 12, 2012. Joanne and Jan moved to French Woods to Jan's hand-crafted home in 1984. Soon thereafter, Joanne found herself a place in the Hancock Central School Main Office, a position she would hold for over thirty years. As the Main Office paraprofessional, she fixed the jammed copier 522,908 times, realigned he duplicator 9,815 times, and turned off the melting laminator, which someone had left on, 6,450 times. She could often be seen with black "toner fingers," and, in the old days, purple "mimeo fingers," but she always took care of machinery-impaired faculty and staff with good will. Thousands of students, faculty, custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and administrators can close their eyes and hear her voice. Each first day of school, and all mornings after that, the PA clicked on and the entire building heard: "Good Morning, HCS. Today is September 5th, 2019, and it is day one of your schedule. Welcome Back! The menu for today is...." She was a mentor to all her office assistants, whom she held in a special place in her heart. She treated them with love, humor, and generosity, qualities that defined her life. Joanne was an enthusiastic traveler whether she was chaperoning a school group to Europe, traveling with Jan to his homestead in the Czech Republic, or spending time with her family in her favorite destination: The End - Montauk. She spent many happy family gatherings fishing, lying in the sun, and relaxing in Montauk and later in Southampton. There was always an informal "do not call" notice when the Giants were playing or during any of the Grand Slam tennis tournaments. In fact, that "do not call" warning was in effect in the middle of the night during the overseas tournaments, when Joey would often watch the matches live in the middle of the night. After her retirement from HCS in 2015, she began her new career as a volunteer for the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry and The Bethany Ministry at St. Paul's church in Hancock. A faithful parishioner at St. Paul's, she was a lector at Sunday Masses and volunteered in the church office whenever she was needed. She leaves behind many good friends and former colleagues, her St. Paul's family, and all the students she influenced over the years. Her beloved sister Peggy and brother-in-law Mike Naughton and her beloved sister Diane Fuchs, survive. She also leaves behind her cherished nieces and nephews: Maureen and Ryan Byrne, Brian and Sandra Naughton, Karen and John Steinert, Katie Naughton, Janine and Erick Englehardt, James and Kristie Scarabino, Nicholas and Melissa Figluizzi, and 17 great-nieces and nephews. Her parents and her sister, Anne Marie Figluizzi, predeceased her. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 346 West Main Street, Hancock, NY on Saturday, September 14th, 2019 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery with Jan. A luncheon will follow at St. Paul's Father Rausch Hall. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry or the Hancock Community Education Foundation. Arrangements by Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock. SERVICES Mass Saturday, September 14, 2019 11:00 AM St. Paul's Church 346 W. Main St Hancock, NY 13783
