John F. "Bud" Mason, 86, of Hancock, died on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at home, surrounded by loved ones, after a long illness. He was born on January 29, 1930, in Apex, NY, the son of John E. and Gladys (Reedy) Mason. John worked as a clerk for the NYS Department of Transportation for many years until retirement. Prior to that, he ran several businesses, including, the family greenhouse business, the Hancock Family Restaurant, and the Snack Bar. He was a past volunteer of the Hancock Fire Department and member on the Hancock Central School Board, where he served as President for many years. John will be remembered as a generous and selfless person who loved gardening and sharing whatever he grew. He was most proud of his grandchildren and his 2 great grandchildren. Surviving are 3 children, Gina (Tom) O'Boyle, Barbara Mason (Larry Ligas), and John N. Mason, their mother, Rev. Barbara Hanstine, 6 grandchildren, Daniel McGraw, Kelia Mason (Jason Dufton), Sam and Zack Worobey, and Pat, Kaitlyn, and Connor O'Boyle, and 2 great grandchildren, Ella and Sawyer Dufton. He is also survived by his close friend, Eugene Secord, and his caregivers who were with him for the past 2 years. John was predeceased by 1 grandson, John N. Mason II. Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 10, 2016 from 4-6PM with a memorial service following at 6PM all at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock. Father Daniel Quinn will officiate.
