Obituary

The Lord called Justin C. O'Donnell home on July 18, 2016 from his residence in Lakewood, Pennsylvania. He was surrounded by loved ones including his wife, Barbara, who has cared and comforted him for nearly two years. Justin would be the first to say he lived a good life in his 81 years. He is reunited with his first wife of nearly 55 years, Marilyn. He will be missed by their seven children, three son-in-laws, a daughter-in-law, fourteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a stepdaughter and a foster daughter. Justin also leaves behind a sister, brother, their spouses, nieces, nephews and dear friends.Justin was born June 30, 1935 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was the eldest son of Justin P. and Clare M. O'Donnell. He learned at a very young age what sacrifice and hard work means, having to miss out on his love of sports while attending North Catholic High School to work and help provide for his family. After high school, Justin entered the Marines as a rough and tough boy and emerged as a disciplined and strong man. He served on the USS Northhampton during the Korean War.Justin's passion was to work with his hands. He would have loved to follow in his Uncle Al's footsteps and have been a carpenter by trade. Instead, he entered the world of banking. He began a successful career in 1958 as a loan adjuster by day and a car repossessor by night. During the upcoming years, Justin attended Duquesne University and Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University while being a husband and father to a growing family. In 1995, after 37 years in banking, Justin retired as President and Chief Executive Officer of First Virginia Bank. Throughout his career he chaired numerous fundraising committees for nonprofits including; Catholic Charities, American Heart Association, and American Cancer Society. He also held various directorships within the banking community.Upon retiring, Justin moved to his weekend residence in Lakewood, PA. Thereafter, he enjoyed over 21 years at his beautiful home nestled in the woods overlooking a lake. He focused on doing the things he loved: being with family, enjoying the outdoors, hunting, fishing, raising Brittanys and game fowl, building with his hands, playing with his tractors, dozers, dump trucks and traveling the world. Throughout his life, Justin gave back to the community both publicly and privately. During his time in Lakewood, he was involved with Wayne Memorial Hospital, Northern Wayne Community Library, Northern Wayne Family Health Center - Lake Como, Northern Wayne Property Owners Alliance, Odd Fellows - Lake Como, American Legion - Post 209 and Lake Underwood Nimrod Club.Justin C. O'Donnell was a doer and a fighter up to his final day. He valued the importance of having a foundation of faith, loved his family dearly and believed in commitment, trust, respect and accepting responsibility. He often shared his wisdom and inspired others to recognize their potential. His life has touched many. A private viewing with Justin's immediate family was held July 20, 2016. Justin's toughest fight for the last five years was battling cancer. Memorial donations may be made, in his name, to Hospice of the Sacred Heart at 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702, http://www.hospicesacredheart.org/donations/ or The American Legion, Six Star Post 209, PO Box 194, Lakewood, PA 18439.
