Obituary

Laura Phillips of Shehawken, PA, passed away on Monday, February 7, 2022. She was 89 years young. She was predeceased by her parents, Glenn and Carola White; husband, W. Douglas Phillips, brother Lewis White; and sister Louise Bennett. Laura is survived by her four children; Gayle Milko and her husband Michael, Doug Phillips and his wife Sharon, Charlie Phillips and his wife Connie, and Bill Phillips and his wife, Cathy. Laura had six grandchildren, Aaron Phillips, Melissa Dubas and her husband Ryan, Ryan Phillips and his wife Breanne, Tyler Phillips and his wife Katie, Lyndsey, Kyle, and Matthew Phillips. Laura also had five great grandchildren that were much adored: Harper, Henley, Conor, Ryleigh and Bennett. If you found yourself over the last half century at any local sporting event, chances are you recognized Laura attending every baseball, basketball, cheerleading, track, football, cross country, and soccer event that her family was involved in with her husband Doug by her side and then continued attending after his death. Her passion and love for sports was obvious. Later in life she enjoyed questioning referees and umpires who would look up but dare not challenge her. If she wasnt watching sports she was playing them. Not only did she golf until the age 85, but she golfed well; and didnt mind telling you how well either. A league player at Lake Lorain you would find her every week with her friends on the course. She was a softball player at the very beginning of womens league softball, and a bowler who earned a spot in Wayne County Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. If sports werent keeping her busy her numerous other engagements did. She was a 53-year member of the Nakomias Rebekah Lodge. a Member of the Chapter #51 Eastern Star, and a 55 year member of the Shehawken UMC. Upon entering the sanctuary you would find Laura with Doug, and later with her road trip partner Sylvia in the same spot every Sunday, offering a heartwarming "Hey-Ho There" whenever a familiar face walked in. She served her church family in a variety of roles and was best known for the delicious desserts that she made for coffee hour. Laura enjoyed sharing her desserts with family and friends as well. She would light up when she saw the positive reactions of others when walking in with a much coveted, favorite dessert. Cooking and baking for people was a true gift and talent that she enjoyed. Laura was not only a baker but an excellent cook and made her living that way from owning and operating the "Trophy Diner" to becoming the head cook at Mount Tone Ski Area and Camp Lohikan for well over 25 years. At the height of Camp Lohikans success, Laura cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner for nearly 1000 campers for the eight week camp season. When camp season was over you could find Laura at home preparing for family and friends that hunted on the family property. As dozens arrived armed with rifles, Laura was armed and ready with a spatula and no one went out into the woods on an empty stomach! Laura also enjoyed making maple syrup from the many trees on the property, starting with her husband Doug and carried on her with son Douglas Jr. She was always there to hold a ladle or make sure the sap never burned! She was as tough as they come, whether mowing the grass, taking care of her blueberry bushes or refilling birdfeeders for what became the fattest songbirds in Wayne County. She was fearless and strong even to the point of chasing a bear off her front porch with a broom while losing her glasses. We still havent found those glasses. Laura loved her family and friends fiercely. She was bright eyed and energetic up until the end. While she was unable to do things that she loved like her weekly square dancing or yearly visits to the beach her strong will remained along with her distain for being coddled. While her family worried as she was being life flighted, she said to the EMTs, in true Laura fashion, "Can this wait? I want to see the end of the Ryder Cup". Our loss is truly heavens gain. She will be missed so very much. We imagine that she is with Doug watching sports on multiple TVs with Doug looking over and asking, "how about a coffee Loll?" We can still see her smiling and looking out that kitchen window. A Celebration of Life for Laura will be held Saturday, May 14, 2022 at Shehawken United Methodist Church.
