Obituary

Lenore J. (Smith) Hesse, passed away peacefully with family by her side on January 29, 2024, in Andover NJ. Lenore began her journey November 30, 1934, in Highland, NY. She was the third of nine children born to Alfred and Marion (Palmer) Smith, and the third of eight girls.

Lenore graduated from Ellenville High School in 1952 and shortly thereafter met Howard ("Red") Hesse (1986) whom she married on December 17, 1955. Red and Lenore moved to Hancock in 1957 where they raised their three sons Robert, Michael (1981), and John.

Many of us will remember Lenore from Hancock Central Schools as an aide, the substitute teacher caller, or in other positions. She retired from her main role in 2005 but continued calling substitutes until 2007.

After retiring Lenore enjoyed her time traveling to New Jersey caring for her granddaughter and grand dogs. She enjoyed shopping at Talbots, buying Vera Bradly, overfeeding her grand dogs and being a "stay-at-home gram."

Lenore spent many years living on what is / was fondly known as Hesse's flats overlooking the Delaware River. She spent many years there and as a tribute fisherman have fondly named the area Lake Lenore.

Lenore is survived by her sons Robert (Beth) and John (Karla), grandchildren Michael, Lauren and Emma, great grandchildren, Paige, Owen and Liam, and sisters Elaine, Rita (Vern) Darmstadter, and Katherine (Pete) Trow, brother Larry and many nieces and nephews.
