Richard "Dick" Geer made a peaceful transition between this life and the next on September 27th, 2021, at Wilson Hospital, from recent health complications. Richard (90) was born on March 31st, 1931 to the late Raymond and Edith (Knapp) Geer, in Starlight, PA and was the eldest of 9 children. Dick was married twice. He married his first wife Joyce, (Laraway) of Apex, NY on August 18th, 1950. Together they had 6 children. Joyce pre-deceased him in 1994 after 44 years of marriage. Five of their 6 children also pre-deceased him.
He married his second wife, Patricia (Pethick) of Starlight, PA on August 17th, 1995. They just celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary. In 2020, after managing a larger home and property for years, they moved to a 55+ community in Johnson City, NY to be closer to their healthcare providers and enjoy respite in their new apartment. The couple shared their home with their "baby", Lacey, the Chihuahua.
Richard joined the US Army in 1948. He served for 4 years in the artillery division, stationed in London, England during the Korean War. He was very proud of his service. He often told stories of his time in the service and the many things he and his best friend, Paul Severson, did together. After coming home from the Army, Dick worked as a laborer in factories and later in lumber yards, and retired from Mallery Lumber Co. in Hancock, NY as a forklift operator.
Richard enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing. He was also known for playing his daily lottery numbers, and woodworking. In his later years, he had a teddy bear collection that he enjoyed. He loved his "bang-bang" western movies, as well as James Bond movies and country music. He loved traveling and visiting new places, and entertaining friends and family at home on the patio with him behind the grill.
The American Legion was a large part of his life as well, holding local post offices, including commander, Delaware County commander, Sixth District Commander and New York State department Sgt.-at-Arms. His continued membership with the organization lasted over 50 years.
Richards constant example of service to others above himself was evident until the very end. Dick faced his problems head-on and he considered his word a contract with a handshake to seal the deal. Dicks humor, fast wit, stories, gentle spirit and joy attracted many people, and in later years all of his nurses and caretakers to him magnetically. Richard celebrated his 90th birthday with a few family members and friends and wanted so badly to be a centurion to "get my face on that Smuckers Jar".
Many who knew him, know he lived a humble life and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He didn't ask for much, lived simply, happily loving his friends and family unconditionally. In his younger years, he played Santa Claus wandering around Cadosia on Christmas Eve visiting family, friends and neighbors and dropping off small gifts. Many may remember him as a hardworking man providing for his family, always making sure his family had what they needed even if it meant he went without.
Richard is pre-deceased by his first wife Joyce, 5 children including Judith, Richard, Walter and a still-born baby who all died in a tragic house fire, and later by his eldest son Robert.. He was also pre-deceased by brothers Charles (Arlene), Donald (Claudia), Harold (Helen), sister Betty May, and his parents Raymond and Edith. Surviving are his brothers Carl (Ann), Dennis and David (Linda) and sister Marilynn (Raymond) Wormuth, daughter-in-law Joan (Walley) youngest son Paul and daughter-in-law Diane (Cornell), 2 grandchildren Melissa (Geer) & husband Bill Crandall and Christopher ("Jake") Geer and wife Sarah (Malinski), 2 great-grandsons Christopher and Aaron, and 1 great-great-granddaughter Scarlet ("Lettie"), many nephews and nieces and countless friends.
