Russell "Chick" Dermond passed away suddenly on May 9, 2015.Russell was a member of the US Navy as well as a two time OlympicFlatwater Kayaker. He also served as Manager of the US Olympic Canoeand Kayak Team in 1972. He had a lifelong love of paddling andcanoe sports and recently received the "Legends of Paddling Award" from the American Canoe Association. He was also recently inducted into the American Canoe Association Paddlesports Hall of Fame.Russell was married on November 22, 1958 to Joan Banholzer and had 56wonderful years of marriage. He is the beloved father of Jean (Brian)Gunn, Kevin (Susan) Dermond, Leslie Mengersen and Bonnie (Will)Rhoades. He is also the adored grandfather of Sean, Corinne, Lianne,Janie, Eric, Bridget, Brendan, Jenna, Emily and William.Russell is survived by his sisters, Barbara Horan and Nancy Falasca,and brother, Carl Springel, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their children.In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in his name to:American Canoe Association-Sugar Island Fundc/o Mrs. M.
