Shirley Alene (Mahon) Davis, 91, of Hancock, NY passed away on 12/9/18 at Roscoe Nursing Home in Roscoe, NY.
Shirley was born on December 13, 1926 to Horton and Helen Mahon of Hancock, both of whom predeceased her, as did siblings Lorraine and Harlow. She was born with a hole in her heart and often told the story of the Dr. telling her parents at her birth that she "wouldnt live six months." How wrong they were! Shirley grew up in Hancock, graduated from HCS in 1944 and married William D. Davis in 1946. They had three sons, Carl J. Davis of Hancock, Craig R. Davis of Walton, and Kevin P. Davis, formerly of Magnolia, DE who predeceased her.
Shirley was the Deputy Village Clerk in Hancock for 23 years, retiring in 1989. She attended the Hancock Baptist Church for many years, participating in Sunday School classes and playing piano. She also played piano at home for her family where her grand and great grandchildren especially loved hearing her play and sing "How Much is that Doggie in the Window?" Her other hobbies included researching and recording her family genealogy, writing letters or cards to family near and far, and even writing an occasional poem. Shirley doted on her family and hosted many wonderful holiday gatherings with her husband. She loved ham dinners and made the worlds best macaroni salad. In her younger years, she loved to Christmas or Birthday shop and spoiled the family with too many gifts and treasured family memories. When it was time to go home from visiting them, she was likely to slip you some gas money (even if you didnt need it) and she and her husband would stand on the porch and wave until you were out of sight, no matter how cold it was. Shirley was a Christian and led a life of kindness and love, rarely uttering a negative word about anyone.
Shirley is survived by her husband Billie Davis of 72 years, her sons Carl and Craig (wife Debbie), and daughter-in-law, Carol Davis. She is survived by grandchildren and great grandchildren: Colleen (David) Stoiano of NC and their children Abby and Aaron, Kelinda Crawford of OH and her children Danika and Cade, Traci (John) Lanner of Deposit and son Justin, Rebecca Davis (Tom Jenkins) of Binghamton and sons Jesse and Nathan, Brian (Ashley) Davis of Otego and daughters Kenley and Briella, Michael (Tanya) Davis of NH and daughters Ahlanna and Kira, Michelle (Jeff) Taylor of DE and sons Chase and Seth, and Matthew Moore of CA. She has many nieces and nephews as well.
Shirley helped anyone who asked her and lots of people who didnt ask her. She made the world a better place and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
