Swier
July 17, 1947 – August 5, 2024
Stanley R. Swier, born on July 17, 1947, in Utica, New York, passed away at home on August 5, 2024, surrounded by family and leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service. He was the beloved son of Stanley and Bernice Swier of Utica. Stan graduated from Utica College and later earned a master's degree from Northern Arizona University and a Ph.D. in entomology from Ohio State University. He served in the Army Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1976.
Stan's professional career included teaching math and science at Hancock Central School from 1969 to 1970 and working as a Cooperative Extension entomologist at the University of New Hampshire from 1978 until his retirement in 2011. He was deeply involved in his community, serving as the treasurer and a founding member of the Barrington Food Pantry for over 30 years and as the Town Moderator of Barrington for 33 years, until 2018. In recognition of his contributions, he was named Barrington Citizen of the Year in 2018. He was also a founding commissioner of the Swains Lake Village Water District, where he served for several decades.
In addition to his civic engagement, Stan enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a dedicated husband and father.
Stan is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Frances; his son, Robert; his sister, Sandra, of Cazenovia, NY; nephews Shawn and Michael Smith and their families; and brother-in-law, Raymond Schwenk, of Starlight, PA. He will be remembered fondly by his family, friends, and community for his kindness and dedication.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of hospice provider Cornerstone VNA for excellent support during a difficult time.
Memorial contributions in Stan's memory may be made to the Barrington Community Food Pantry or to Cornerstone VNA of Rochester.
Friends and family may call from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm on Friday, August 9, 2024, at Purdy Memorial Chapel; 2 Concord Road (Rt. 4), Lee NH 03861.
A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, 346 W. Main St., Hancock, NY, at 10:30AM. Burial will follow in St. Paul's Cemetery, Hancock, NY.
