Obituary

Virginia (Green) Snyder, 75, of Hancock, died peacefully after a decade long battle with a chronic illness, on Monday, August 10, 2015 at Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, NY. She was born on March 15, 1940 in Scranton, PA, one of nine children of John E. Sr. and Elizabeth (Griffith) Green. Although her given name was Virginia, most knew her as "Ginny", and even some accented it to be "Jenny", but either way, if you called her Mrs. Snyder, she would say, "That's my mother-in-law, just call me Ginny." Ginny worked several different retail jobs over the years, including manager of 2 video store locations, in Hancock and Roscoe, as well as the Victory Video in Hancock. Although she was the manager of the Country Store, many people know her from her tenure at the Grand Union and Great American stores. She was a volunteer Girl Scout Troop Leader, a Sunday School teacher at the Emory United Methodist Church in town and a Charter Member of the Hancock Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary for many years. During her time with the auxiliary, she was active in the Firemen's Field Days and parade activities. Ginny had a creative side that ranged from hairstyling and cake decorating to painting and wall papering. Her hobbies included gardening and fishing (especially with her grandchildren), and being raised a coal miner's daughter on a Pennsylvania farm, she particularly loved being outdoors and time spent with family and friends at Tomar Mountain Gun Club. Surviving is her husband of almost 54 years, Leander B. Snyder, Hancock, NY, 1 daughter, Brenda Snyder, Leesburg, VA, 1 son, Brian Snyder, Hancock, NY, and 2 grandchildren, Amanda and Kyle Mihalka, Leesburg, VA. She is also survived by 4 sisters, Meg Wahl, Hancock, NY, Irene Watkins, Hancock, NY, Rosie Frisbee, Hawley, PA, and Lorraine Stiffey and husband Ken, Diamond Springs, CA, 25 nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by 3 sisters, 1 brother and most recently a niece: Elizabeth Green and Romaine Green, both infants at the time, Margie (Green) Pascavage, Newark, NJ, John E. Green, Jr., Winterdale, PA., and Karen (Wahl) Ramburg Klinegardner, Horton, NY. Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 14, 2015 from 6-9PM at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock. A funeral service will be on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 11AM also at the funeral chapel. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Hancock. A special "Thank You" to a wonderful physician and friend, Dr. Richard E. Berg. Donations can be made in Ginny's memory to the Town of Hancock Ambulance, P.O. Box 733, Hancock, NY 13783.
