IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William D.
Davis
February 17, 1923 – April 7, 2023
William "Billie" D. Davis, 100, passed away on April 7, 2023 at Delhi Nursing Home in Delhi NY.
Bill was born February 17, 1923 in Hancock, NY to Jennie & William Davis. He was predeceased by his parents and his 7 siblings. Billie grew up in Hancock where he attended school. In 1946, he married Shirley Mahon. They were married for 72 years until she predeceased him in 2018. They had three sons, Carl Davis of Hancock, Craig Davis of Walton, and Kevin Davis, formerly of Magnolia, DE who predeceased him.
Billie served in the US Army 1944-1946 during WW II in Burma, India. After his service, he returned to Hancock where he worked various jobs over the years including the railroad, 25 years at Shakelton's Garage, and NYS State DOT which he retired from in 1988 affectionately known as "Dinker." For many years he had two jobs, working on Phil Faigle's tractor trailers on weekends. He enjoyed working on vehicles, and passed this interest down to his sons. His hobbies included home improvements with his brother LaVerne "Bum" Davis, fishing, gardening, wood working and "tinkering" in the basement. In his 80's he helped his grandchildren put a roof on their two-story house and he mowed lawns with his friend Gene Secord. He continued to exercise into his 90's, even building his own modified pulley to work on his arm strength as his legs failed him. Against the odds, he recovered from a broken leg and a long battle with Covid-19. He became a centenarian in February.
Bill was a family man and the home he shared with Shirley was the epicenter for holiday gatherings for many years. They supported their children and spoiled the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They never returned from a shopping trip without a small gift for someone they loved. They attended the concerts, parades, school plays, and celebrations for all the kids and took joy in simply sitting on the front porch talking with a friend.
Billie is survived by his sons Carl, Craig (wife Debbie), and daughter-in-law, Carol Davis and by grandchildren and great grandchildren: Colleen (David) Stoiano of NC and their children Abby and Aaron; Kelinda Crawford of OH and her children Danika and Cade; Traci (John) Lanner of Deposit and son Justin; Rebecca (Tom) Jenkins of Binghamton and sons Jesse (Amanda) and Nathan; Brian (Ashley) Davis of Otego and daughters Kenley, Briella & Elena; Michael (Tanya) Davis of NH and daughters Ahlanna and Kira; Michelle Taylor of DE and sons Chase and Seth; and Matthew Moore of CA. He has many nieces and nephews as well.
Bill was a quietly devoted brother, husband, father and grandparent; a strong and caring man who served his country and his family. He will be deeply missed.
