Wilma J. Buchanan Chapman Sprague, 87, entered into eternal fellowship with her Lord and Savior, January 1, 2019, at her home following a short illness. She was born May, 21, 1931 in Rock Rift, NY, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Brown Buchanan.
Wilma attended Hancock Central School and was a majorette while in high school. She resided in East Homer and Cortland area for many years, before returning to Hancock. While in Cortland, Wilma was employed at WT Grants and Smith Corona. She also helped on the family farm while in East Homer. After relocating to Hancock, she was employed at Hancock Hospital as housekeeping supervisor. She was most recently a home care provider for adults with physical and mental challenges through Broome County Developmental Center. Wilma was a former member of the East Homer Methodist Church, Albright Grange #441 in East Homer, and the Cortland County Home Bureau. Wilma most recently attended the East Branch Community Church.
Surviving are her husband, Harry Sprague of Hancock, whom she married on August 13, 1988. Also surviving are her sons, Richard (Barbara) of Preble, Leonard (Jesse) of Hancock, Donald (Donna) of Hancock, Carl (Joan) of Hancock, and her daughter Marilyn Phillips of Cortland, 10 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Beulah Karcher of Deposit, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Wilma was predeceased by her husband, Richard H. Chapman on July 31, 1966, her brothers: Johnnie, Joseph, Frank, Everett, and Howard (Tim) Buchanan, her sisters: Margaret Book, Denzie Elliot, Evelyn Mengal, Alice Oralls, Virginia Buchanan, and Bernice Sutton. She was recently predeceased by a great granddaughter, Courtney Phillips, on December 18, 2018.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 7, 2019 from 11AM-1PM with a funeral service following at 1PM all at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock, with Pastor Paul Cicio officiating. Spring interment will be in the East Homer Cemetery, East Homer, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be directed to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105 or to the charity of ones choice.
